The Society of Nigerian Broadcasters (SNB) has cautioned the National Broadcasting Commission (NBC) against moves that could shut down campus radio stations, warning that such actions would undermine the training of thousands of Mass Communication students across Nigeria’s universities and polytechnics.
Speaking at the SNB’s second National Conference in Kano, National President Umar Pate emphasized that campus radio stations are not commercial enterprises but vital “training laboratories” for future broadcasters. “We appeal to the NBC to recognise that universities are not commercial entities. These facilities are critical for grooming the next generation,” Pate said, urging the federal government to shield tertiary institutions from regulatory pressures.
He further called on the NBC to issue additional broadcast licences to accredited institutions in line with National Universities Commission (NUC) and National Board for Technical Education (NBTE) standards.
The conference, themed “Broadcasting Ethics and Professionalism in the Age of Artificial Intelligence,” brought together representatives from Kano, Borno, Bauchi, and Kaduna state governments, who pledged continued support for professional journalism.
Kano State Governor’s spokesperson Sanusi Bature reaffirmed the state’s commitment to quality media practice, while commissioners from Borno and Bauchi echoed calls for stronger collaboration with the SNB.
