Nigeria has recorded more than 24.47 million confirmed malaria cases between January and September 2025, according to the latest National Health Statistics Report released by the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare.

The data shows a steady rise across the three quarters of the year. Between January and March, 7.3 million people tested positive out of 10.52 million screened. From April to June, 7.84 million cases were confirmed out of 11.45 million tests. The July–September rainy season, which typically intensifies mosquito breeding, saw the highest surge, with 9.32 million positives out of 12.88 million tested. In total, 34.85 million Nigerians were tested, with 24,467,232 confirmed cases.

Nearly 23.9 million patients with uncomplicated malaria received Artemisinin-based Combination Therapy (ACT) during the same period, with treatment numbers rising in line with the quarterly increase in cases, per Punch Newspaper.

Health experts warn that without aggressive interventions, the figures could climb further before year-end. Nigeria continues to carry the world’s heaviest malaria burden, accounting for 27% of global cases and 31% of deaths, according to the 2024 WHO World Malaria Report.

Minister of State for Health, Dr. Iziaq Salako, acknowledged progress under the National Malaria Eradication Programme but stressed the urgent need to expand access to diagnostics, insecticide-treated nets, seasonal chemoprevention, and community-level interventions to reverse the trend.
