Nigeria’s Senate, Bureau of Public Procurement (BPP), and National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA) have called on more than 120,000 ministries, departments, and agencies (MDAs) to adopt the .ng domain name as part of a national push to strengthen digital sovereignty and align with the federal government’s “Made-in-Nigeria” policy.

The call was made at the Tech Convergence 2.0 forum in Abuja, hosted by the Nigeria Internet Registration Association (NiRA), where stakeholders emphasized the .ng domain as a critical marker of national identity, trust, and economic opportunity in the digital age.

Representing Senate President Godswill Akpabio, Senator Diket Plang said, “We live in a digital world, and owning our presence online through .ng is key.” Senate ICT and Cybersecurity Committee Chairman Shuaib Salisu added, “We are stakeholders in our Internet space and must promote what is ours.”

NiRA President Adesola Akinsanya described .ng—Africa’s second-ranked country code top-level domain—as “a symbol of Nigerian digital pride,” urging widespread adoption to ensure every Nigerian has a recognizable online footprint. NiRA Board Chairperson Ibukun Odusote called for immediate action, stating, “There should be an urgent need to adopt what is ours, the .ng domain.”

BPP Director-General Dr. Adebowale Adedokun announced a mandate requiring all MDAs to use .ng domains for official communications, citing the need to eliminate generic domain use and reinforce institutional credibility. NITDA officials highlighted the Internet’s evolution into a national innovation infrastructure, while NiRA COO Oluwaseyi Onasanya challenged attendees to “own our narrative online.”

The forum linked .ng adoption to broader goals under the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA), including freer movement of people, goods, and services. Stakeholders emphasized that digital localization is essential for economic resilience, data protection, and national branding.

NiRA pledged continued collaboration with public and private sector partners to build trust and ensure sustainable compliance through capacity-building and policy alignment.
