Abia State Governor Alex Otti issued a stern warning to would-be election riggers on Thursday, declaring that the 2027 gubernatorial race will be determined by the will of the people and divine providence—not manipulation.

Speaking during his monthly media engagement, “Alex Otti Speaks to Abians,” at the Government House, the governor cautioned that those planning to tamper with the electoral process should “write their wills” in advance.

The remark was a pointed response to recent comments by Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Benjamin Kalu, who predicted that the All Progressives Congress (APC) would take control of Abia in the next election cycle. Otti, a Labour Party governor, dismissed the claim but acknowledged Kalu’s right to contest, urging all aspirants to embrace fair play.

“If they truly want to write results, they should write something else before that time. You know what? Their will,” Otti said, drawing a firm line against electoral interference.

Kalu, who represents Bende Federal Constituency, has been vocal about the APC’s ambitions in the Southeast and is widely seen as a potential contender. Despite political differences, Otti extended a conciliatory gesture, referring to Kalu as a “friend and younger brother” and expressing forgiveness for past criticisms of his administration. “I have forgiven him for berating my personality and my government,” he added, calling for restraint to maintain peace in the state.

Otti also addressed speculation about his political future, firmly rejecting rumors of a party switch. “I am not joining the APC; I am still a member of the Labour Party,” he stated, reaffirming his commitment to party unity and ideological consistency.

As Nigeria’s political terrain continues to shift—with notable defections from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and rising regional tensions—Otti’s comments underscore the high stakes in Abia’s 2027 race. His warning reflects broader concerns about electoral integrity and the need for transparent, credible processes in a democracy under pressure.
