Authorities have apprehended the last remaining fugitive from a mass jailbreak at the Orleans Parish Justice Center, ending a five-month nationwide search.
Derrick Groves, 28, was taken into custody Wednesday in a residential neighborhood here following a brief standoff, according to the U.S. Marshals Service and Louisiana State Police.
Groves, serving a life sentence for second-degree murder, was the 10th and final inmate recaptured from the May 16 escape, in which the group exploited structural weaknesses in the facility to flee.
He faces additional charges related to the breakout, Louisiana Attorney General Liz Murrill said.
The arrest came after a tip led investigators to a home in Atlanta's southwest side. A joint team of U.S. Marshals, Atlanta police SWAT and local authorities surrounded the property around 2 p.m. local time.
Initial sweeps suggested the house was empty, but officers deployed gas canisters into the basement multiple times before discovering Groves concealed in a reinforced crawl space, Deputy U.S. Marshal Brian Fair said.
No injuries were reported, and Groves surrendered peacefully. Video footage from the scene shows him blowing a kiss toward cameras as he was led away in handcuffs. He is being held in Fulton County Jail pending extradition to Louisiana.
The escape highlighted vulnerabilities at the Orleans Parish Justice Center, a facility opened just a decade ago. The 10 inmates, housed in a temporary unit, removed a cell door, pried a metal toilet from the wall and broke through a concrete barrier to create a hole large enough to crawl through. They then crossed a nearby highway on foot.
Investigators found taunting graffiti near the breach, including the phrase "To Easy LoL" accompanied by a smiley face and an arrow pointing to the opening. Orleans Parish Sheriff Susan Hutson attributed the incident to a combination of staffing shortages and design flaws that created blind spots in the building's layout.
Three of the escapees were captured within 24 hours, with the others apprehended in the weeks that followed across Louisiana and neighboring states. Groves, however, remained at large until this week.
Convicted in October 2024 of two counts of second-degree murder and two counts of attempted second-degree murder for a 2018 shooting at a Mardi Gras block party that killed two people, Groves also faced a federal firearms charge. Prosecutors have described him as a potential leader in the escape plot.
