Marcus Rashford scored twice to secure a 2-1 victory for Barcelona over Newcastle United in their UEFA Champions League opener on Thursday, while Erling Haaland marked his 50th competition goal in Manchester City’s 2-0 win against Napoli, and Frankfurt dominated Galatasaray 5-1.
Rashford, on loan from Manchester United, netted his first Barcelona goals at St James’ Park, heading in a Jules Kounde cross before the hour and unleashing a stunning long-range strike in the second half.
Newcastle’s Anthony Gordon scored late, but Barcelona held firm. Rashford expressed his excitement, saying, “It’s an amazing experience playing for Barcelona. We just want to win as much as possible.”
In Manchester, Haaland’s header, assisted by Phil Foden, and Jeremy Doku’s low finish sealed City’s victory after Napoli’s Giovanni Di Lorenzo was sent off. Pep Guardiola praised Haaland’s milestone, noting he’s among elites like Ronaldo and Messi.
Frankfurt overcame an early Galatasaray goal to win 5-1, with Jonathan Burkardt scoring twice. Club Brugge defeated Monaco 4-1, and Sporting CP beat Kairat Almaty 4-1, while Copenhagen and Leverkusen drew 2-2.
