Kenyan runner Faith Kipyegon solidified her dominance in the 1,500 meters, winning her fourth world championship title on Tuesday, September 16, 2025, at the World Athletics Championships, joining Morocco’s Hicham El Guerrouj as the only athletes to achieve this feat in the event.
Kipyegon, 31, finished the race in 3:52.15, nearly three seconds ahead of compatriot Dorcus Ewoi, who took silver with a time of 3:54.92. Australia’s Jessica Hull earned bronze, trailing by 3.98 seconds. The victory in Tokyo, where Kipyegon previously won Olympic gold, capped a remarkable year after she lowered her own 1,500m world record to 3:48.68 in July, following an unsuccessful bid to break the four-minute mile in June.
The race saw Kipyegon glance at the stadium clock on the final lap, signaling the world record was out of reach, yet she extended her lead decisively. Post-race, she assisted Ewoi and Hull, who were exhausted, showcasing sportsmanship. Ewoi, a 28-year-old training in the U.S., called the interaction inspiring, noting Kipyegon’s influence on the sport.
Kipyegon, a mother of a 7-year-old, described defending her title as a dream fulfilled, emphasizing her decade-long reign. Her performance underscores Kenya’s track prowess, with President William Ruto lauding her as a national hero on social media.
