Kylian Mbappé scored twice from the penalty spot to secure a 2-1 comeback victory for 10-man Real Madrid against Olympique de Marseille, marking the club’s historic 200th Champions League win in the opening match of the 2025-26 season.
The Tuesday, September 16, 2025, clash saw Marseille take an early lead through Timothy Weah, assisted by Mason Greenwood, but Mbappé leveled the score in the 29th minute after a foul on Rodrygo and sealed the win in the 81st following a handball. Madrid’s Dani Carvajal was sent off in the 72nd minute for head-butting Marseille goalkeeper Geronimo Rulli, while debutant Trent Alexander-Arnold exited early with a suspected muscle injury. Federico Valverde praised Mbappé, now tied with Ruud van Nistelrooy at 50 goals in 64 matches for Madrid.
Elsewhere, Tottenham edged Villarreal 1-0 via an own goal, Juventus and Borussia Dortmund drew 4-4 in a thrilling encounter, and Arsenal’s substitutes Gabriel Martinelli and Leandro Trossard clinched a 2-0 win over Athletic Bilbao. Union Saint-Gilloise, a Belgian debutant, stunned PSV Eindhoven 3-1, with Canada’s Promise David scoring the season’s first goal from a penalty.
The matches, part of the expanded league-phase format, saw clashes with Marseille fans and Spanish police outside the Santiago Bernabéu, though order was quickly restored. The top eight teams advance directly to the round of 16, with the next 16 entering playoffs.
