President Bola Tinubu convened an urgent late-night meeting on Tuesday with leaders of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), including its president Joe Ajaero, just hours before the union’s scheduled “Day of Rage and Mourning” protest.
The talks were aimed at addressing escalating insecurity across the country and finding common ground to avert nationwide disruption.
The closed-door session at the State House brought together key figures including Progressive Governors’ Forum Chairman and Imo Governor Hope Uzodimma, Edo Governor Monday Okpebholo, Kebbi Governor Nasir Idris, and Minister of State for Labour Nkeiruka Onyejeocha.
Presidential spokesman Bayo Onanuga confirmed that discussions focused on “national security concerns,” particularly bandit attacks that have crippled farming, education, mining, and daily life in several regions.
NLC leaders emerged from the meeting sounding cautiously positive but stopped short of cancelling the protest. Ajaero told reporters: “We had fruitful engagements… We remain committed to Nigerians’ welfare.” Sources described the atmosphere as “cordial yet firm,” with labour leaders reiterating demands for decisive government action against insecurity while acknowledging ongoing efforts.
The planned Wednesday protest—billed as a “Day of Rage and Mourning”—is intended to highlight lives lost to banditry, kidnappings, and communal clashes. Schools in multiple states have already announced closures, and businesses are bracing for disruption. Union leaders warned of potential nationwide paralysis if their demands remain unmet.
As of dawn on Wednesday morning, no official statement had been issued on whether the protest would proceed, leaving its fate uncertain.
