A 3.3 - magnitude earthquake struck off the coast of Silverdale in Lancashire late Wednesday night, shaking homes and waking residents across the South Lakes and Lancashire areas, according to the British Geological Survey (BGS).
The tremor, recorded at 11:23 p.m. at a shallow depth of 3 km (1.86 miles), was felt within a 20 km radius of the epicenter, including towns such as Kendal and Ulverston in Cumbria. Preliminary assessments indicate no significant damage or injuries, though residents flooded social media with accounts of trembling walls, falling objects, and rumbling noises likened to explosions.
BGS confirmed the quake’s impact, noting: It was felt across the South Lakes and Lancashire. Eyewitnesses described sensations of bricks falling and vibrations strong enough to rattle houses.
The UK typically records between 200 and 300 earthquakes annually, though only 20 to 30 are strong enough to be felt by people. This latest tremor adds to the list of minor but noticeable seismic events in the region.
